Sustainability systems project making

WEEK 1

In the very first class of sustainability systems we watched a wonderful documentation name “HOME”. We were asked to write our reflections of the documentation after the class.

My reflection:

HOME’ a French documentary film by Yann Arthus-Bertrand. This film is almost entirely composed of aerial shots of various places on Earth. It shows the diversity of life on Earth and how humanity is threatening the ecological balance of the planet.

The film HOME by Yann Arthus-Bertrand is a beautifully shot panorama of the Earth and the damage done to it by modern humanity. It includes a moving narration about the evolution of the Earth, nature, agriculture, humans, and the crises of habitat destruction, energy depletion, climate disruption, degradation… of the environment, health, economic disparity, and more. They are well integrated in the film, but many assumptions in the script make this film hard to recommend unless accompanied by a reality check on energy and the value of traditional ways. In the past 200,000 years, humans have upset the balance of planet Earth, a balance established by nearly four billion years of evolution. We must act now. The price is too high. Humanity has little time to reverse the trend and change its patterns of consumption. So this way we learned how it’s important to be sustainable and keep things sustainable around the world.

WEEK 2

In this week we again saw a documentary named “Before the floods” by Fisher Stevens. We were told to find the mentioned problems and choose one and then research on it.

WEEK 3

We were now introduced to our project and what are we expected to do for the next 15 weeks. We sat in our groups(Ayushi, Ritika, Nancy, Punya and me) and then were asked to choose a place for our project out of the list: Municipal school, low medium vernacular school, community school, NGO or a night school.  We had to select one place and visit and talk to the students, faculty, staff, etc and get an idea initially about the awareness of plastic among them.

We searched many NGO’s and municipal schools and came across AKANKSHA FOUNDATION that has many branches in Mumbai. While searching we came to know about SHINDHE WADI MUMBAI PUBLIC SCHOOL. We decided to visit the school and do some primary research.

WEEK 4

We visited the school and talk with the teachers and students. We observed the 7th grade students and questioned them about plastic. we observed that they had enough knowledge about what plastic is and how can it be reused. so now we move forwards to the areas where they didn’t had that knowledge.

After few days we again visited the school to meet the principal and she was very welcoming and was fine with us to carry out our project in their school. The principal suggested us to take up class 3rd and 4th instead of class 5th-7th since they had their unit tests and also 3rd and 4th grade are currently learning about recycling so according to her they would be able to relate to us in a better way. This time we observed the 3rd grade and had the chance to be inside the class and observe.

WEEK 5

For the 5th week, we submitted the info-graphic of movie ”and reflection of the movie ‘HOME’

Along with that we discussed further about the module for the sessions we have to take as a group for ‘PLASTIC’

WEEK 6

In week 6 we had to derive conclusions from the responses that we got and then upon that decide what areas we can work on related to our topic.

We had got very contradicting answers so we decided to work on a few topics initially and then cut down to one. We firstly decided to work on finding alternatives, find out what countries in the world produce more plastic so we can look upon a particular country and lastly how will we persuade people to opt for alternatives that are available for plastic.

Our secondary research begins.

WEEK 7

In the week 7 we had a thorough research on the 3 topics that we had decided in the last class. After all this secondary research we decided that we would work upon the alternatives. We found that the available alternatives are either very expensive or the cheaper ones are not very durable so either we work on reducing the cost of existing alternatives or come up with cheaper, durable and stronger bio-plastic.

We made a presentation based on the data we had searched on:

WEEK 8

for week 8 we divided the word and the research part and experimented with methods of how we can make the bio plastic more durable or what can be added in the alternatives for better functioning and etc.
